Safeguarding

Our Schools Safeguarding

St Edmund Campion Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment, including our Child Protection Policy which can be viewed below.

Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies, when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalism and extremism.

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead is Mrs Woolley (Head Teacher). Our Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads are Mrs Cross (Deputy Head Teacher), Mr Tuckwell (Leader of Learning), Miss Walsh (Year 3) and Miss Dawson (Year 5). The Governor with responsibility for safeguarding in our school is Mrs Karen Richards.

Photographs and Videos

Whilst lots of parents and carers really enjoy seeing photos and videos of their children’s school life we are very mindful of our duty of care towards all our pupils. We take the issue of safeguarding very seriously and this includes the use of photographic and video images.

Any photographs or videos taken by parents, carers and relatives at school productions, sports days or other events are for the enjoyment of individual families. They must not be used in any way that could potentially place a child at risk. This would include publishing images in any form of print or on the internet including social networking sites. This is emphasised before plays and events etc.

We understand that in exceptional circumstances a parent or carer may not wish their child to be photographed or videoed in this way. If this is the case then please contact the headteacher to discuss how this can be best achieved.

Occasionally, the local press will be invited to take photographs of school events and special achievements. We like to use photographs of our children on our website, in school documents, for parent information meetings, newsletters and on our display screens around the school. If you do not wish photographs of your child to be used for these purposes, then please contact the Headteacher.

Safeguarding Culture at SEC

Having a system where concerns can be reported immediately

  • SEC uses the CPOMs recording system. This is a secure digital platform that enables staff to record their safeguarding concerns quickly and easily.
  • Any visitors to our school are made aware of the reporting process. (Leaflet and visible signage of the DSLs are displayed throughout the school).
  • Actions in response to any concerns are timely and effective. At SEC we have a ‘Ten Minute rule’ – staff must report to a DSL within ten minutes.

Supporting our children

  • Pupils understand what is unacceptable and how they can disclose this information to us, even if the disclosure isn’t about them.
  • Pupils know they should speak to a ‘trusted adult’ if they have a worry or use the ‘worry jar’/’worry monster.’
  • Pupils feel safe and are confident to seek help if they need to.
  • All pupils take part in the NSPCC ‘Speak out, stay safe’ programme.

Safeguarding Governor

  • Our Safeguarding Governor supports all our staff and safeguarding leads.
  • SEC follows the safer recruitment processes.

Working with parents and carers

  • We support our parents and make sure that they are not only aware of what safeguarding is, but show them how they can report concerns to us.
  • We ensure that the parents of our pupils know that we are always there to hear their concerns and that their concerns will always be confidential.

Continual Professional Development

  • As a school we use Flick safeguarding training every September for all staff and governors.
  • School attends the DSL Networks each term at Trust level.
  • Regular practice in staff meetings to ensure that practical examples of safeguarding are discussed to ensure that we keep safeguarding at the forefront of all that we do.
  • All staff understand and recognise risk, as well as potential signs of harm, abuse or other safeguarding concerns.
  • DSLs also attend any NCC CPD/training.

Curriculum

  • Elements of our curriculum enable pupils to recognise and respond to risks to their wellbeing which are successfully designed and delivered – for example,

o learning about online safety or healthy relationships

o Clear RSE programme in school.

Environment

  • Our environment is effectively designed to safeguard students – this includes physical aspects of the learning environment as well as more cultural or behavioural elements, such as zero-tolerance of discriminatory language.
